Hi everyone! I'm very excited to be guest blogging about my favorite spring trend here on Bella Remixes. Thank you for having me. :)

I tend to choose bright, solid fabrics for most of my clothing, but it's hard for me to pass up anything with stripes. So I couldn't be happier that stores have been inundated with striped items this spring. I recently picked up this shirt at Ann Taylor LOFT for $8 and paired it with my light pink skinny jeans and red blazer for a classic nautical-chic look.

Orange You Tired of Pastels Every Spring?
Trends are funny things. Every year, March through May, I used to feel like such a failure for not making fresh, Easter-egg pastels and feminine, cheerful brights in to my wardrobe. Powder pink? I look washed out, and the garment looks dirty. Bright fuschia? Well, I look good, but I don't feel good. What's a rough-and-tumble, tomboyish, deep winter to do in Spring?

This season blessedly provided me an answer: orange!

A lot of my friends are unhappy about the prevalence of orange in stores right now. Growing up, I'd always been told - by women as well as lots of color personality quizzes in magazines - that orange is only for the "optimistic" or "obnoxious" or "extremely extroverted." I am not a loud person, and I am surely not an extrovert (despite the fact that I publish pictures of myself on the internet), and I'm generally pretty cynical - so I have been giving all shades of orange a wide berth up until just about a year ago. However, after giving orange a chance, I now feel that those labels are very subjective and that it really only matters how the color feels to me.

To me, orange is the color of kumquats, traffic cones, and golden poison arrow frogs. It clearly and silently says, "bitter and dangerous: do not eat" -- which is a fantastic style statement as far as I'm concerned.

Now that orange has hit the market with full force, I have my beady little eyes on anything I can secure for relatively cheap. I already nabbed this great orange cowl neck top ($1 via Goldenwest Swap meet) and orange blazer ($30 via Forever 21) this year. I am returning the orange skirt on the left because it doesn't fit well in the hips, but I'm on the hunt for another like it. I've had the shimmery copper skirt on the right for a while now, and it's one of my favorites.

If you don't already love orange, and don't hate it instinctively, this is the perfect season to pop into a store and give it a try. Maybe you don't see poisonous frogs - maybe you see sunflowers and sherbet! You may be pleasantly surprised at how this warm, unabashed color can perk up your day, light up your complexion, and add a bit of edge. Highly recommended for fans of tomato red, citron, lemon yellow, and apple green.

This week I am taking a short break from blogging. In the meantime, I asked a few lovely ladies from my favorite fashion website, YouLookFab, to write a guest post for me. They will each be featuring a spring trend and show you how they will be integrating it to their wardrobe. My first guest is citygirldc. She blogs over at A Day in the Life of ...Me!, about her life, adventures and life in D.C.

When Bella asked me to write a guest post for her, I thought "what the heck am I going to post about?" I'm not a writer and just like taking photos, plus Bella's got a great sense of style. But then she asked me to explain what my take of Spring fashion was so I immediately thought of florals. Okay, I can write a little something about that.

Yes, the current trends are all about color blocking, patterns, the color "orange" and midi skirts. I also like those trends but as of this moment when I think of Spring, I think of flowers and sun and daylight. Happy things, you know. So here are are a few items that I have been wearing currently and are flexible enough to wear through the Spring and Summer months.

Pop of color

I wore this to a friend's birthday. We had originally planned to have a girls' night out. Then the birthday girl requested that we instead stay home, eat a lot of food, drink bubbly, and play games. We still decided to dress up for the occasion though.
I wouldn't normally wear wool tights with this outfit, but since we were staying home, I just wanted to be cozy.

Leather skirt

You are getting a glimpse into my kitchen today, how fun!

I thrifted this skirt in December and have already worn it a few times but it is finally making its blog debut. I had been on the lookout for a leather skirt for a while but kept coming up empty handed. I found a few nice skirts at the thrift stores but they were all too small. Finally, one day I searched the skirts rack in vain only to find out that another person right before me had already gathered all the leather skirts in the store most likely to try them on and had hung them all together in one place. Bingo! As soon as I put this one on, I know it was coming home with me.
Our journey was a bit bumpy though. First I had to disinfect it in the freezer. After a few wears, I found out that it was coming apart inexplicably at the backseam and the hem. Fortunately, a quick trip to the tailor fixed the problem.
Since then I have acquired a genuine vintage leather skirt from my mom, which I am looking forward to wearing. The other one is a midi, and very lady-like so I am waiting for the right occasion! :)

Cost per wear: H&M dress

When I wore this dress last week for the this time last year challenge, I realized that it had gotten a bit too short - due either to mistakenly sticking it in the dryer or to the few pounds I gained over the holidays and haven't been able to lose. In any case, in order to preempt any future fashion mishaps, I am placing this dress in the donate file. I wanted to say it a proper good bye with a cost per wear post.

This dress not only predates the blog, but also the time I started keeping track of cost per wear. So, there are only 11 recorded wearings of this dress, but I am sure there were many more. The dress cost me $20 at H&M in December 2009 and the cost per wear is $1.82, which is pretty good for a dress.
Farewell H&M dress, you will be missed!

A pretty bow

Even though I try to get the most use out of my closet items, certain things just slip by. I realized that I hadn't worn this gorgeous pussy bow blouse for 2 months! Crazy, right?

This sweater was a gift. It is not really my style and I didn't like the colors at first. I just didn't know how to style it. But then I realized that I could layer it over a button down and the penny dropped. It is a really quick, easy piece to throw on when I want to be cozy and comfy. Yay for saving it from being a wardrobe orphan!

Denim shirt: H&M - A fabulous denim shirt with excellent cost per wear. Here is my little post about it.

Striped top: Old Navy - demoted to lounge wear

Skirt: H&M - donated.

Belt: Lord& Taylor - thrifted.

Necklace: Nordstrom - One of the best gifts I've ever received. It is from my secret santa, so judging by the limit on our gift exchange, $20, the cpw is $0.47.

I have most of the items still in my closet, or close-enough substitutes. I just wanted something a bit warmer though, hence the faux fur vest and the boots:

Style Challenge: This time last year - Wednesday

So, this is day 3 of the this time last year challenge. This time last year, I was wearing this outfit:

Booties: Payless. Awesome booties. Cost per wear is $0.71. I recently featured them on the blog.
Dress: H&M - I still have it.
Cardigan:H&M - demoted to lounge wear.
Belt: Vero Moda - One of my favorite belts. I've taken a little break from belts recently, so you don't see it on the blog very often. Cost per wear is $0.89.
Scarf: Yargici - Another of my favorites. cpw $0.83

I really like this outfit, it is probably one of my favorites of all times. I would have easily worn it exactly. However, I got rid of the cardigan and without a boyfriend cardi, the proportions were completely off. I also didn't have a pair of opaque tights to go with it, so I wanted to wear knee high boots to minimize the leg exposure and keep it classy!:) So I scraped everything else and just created a new outfit around the dress.

I think this dress shrank a little after put it in the dryer by mistake. It feels uncomfortably short to wear to work. I love it but I think it is time to pass it on.

This week, I am wearing outfits that I wore this time last year. Here is the second outfit:

As you can see I am wearing the exact same outfit with the addition of a jacket. I added the jacket because a) today is a teaching day, so I like to wear a blazer to project authority, b) it is freezing in my office. I can't really complain because we had a really mild winter. But it's been really cold for the last few days and even with the extra jacket, I feel the need to turn on my space heater.

Here is the rundown:

Boots: Envy - current cost per wear is $2.14.

Tights: Ann Taylor

Denim skirt: One of the most worn items in my closet. CPW $0.31.

Top: Target. CPW $1.36

Sweater: Banana Republic, CPW $1.08

Earrings: I don't remember which earrings I was wearing last year, so I popped these on. Kendra Scott - pretty new, so cpw is still very high. $8.89

I like my current hair better, but I have to admit my red lipstick last year was pretty kick-ass. I should get back in the habit of wearing red lipstick.:)

Style Challenge: This time last year - Monday

So, this week I am re-styling the outfits that I wore this time last year. Here is the first outfit:

Here is the rundown:

Top: Target - this top is no longer in my wardrobe, I recently donated it.

Cardi: H&M - this cardi has been demoted to lounge wear due to pilling. Its cost per wear was at $0.68 at the time, and I stopped keeping track, but I wear still wear it a few times a week.

Jeans: H&M - yup these are gone too, they had started to bag but only after two years of heavy wear, so I got my money's worth.

Necklace: F21 - My mom was looking for a black necklace and she really liked this one, so I gave it to her. CPW was $0.56 for me, but my mom still wears it.

Envy boots - They were only purchased in October 2010, so I still have them.

Since a lot of the items are now missing from my closet, this is what I came up with:

I couldn't manage to take a good picture this morning, so may be two mediocre ones will add up to one?

My thought process was this. I started with the jeans, since they are the anchor of the first oufit. Even though I still have those knee high boots in my closet, I decided to wear these wedge booties. I find those boots a bit more casual and prefer to pair them with skirts this year. I wore this blue cardi, which I purchased to replace a purple one. It is a good substitute, because I can wear it with everything that I previously wore with my purple cardi. The top has the same shiny texture as the previous top, but this one is silk. Instead of my mom's necklace, now I am wearing a bib necklace that I received from my secret santa.

I think this outfit is a bit more chic and sophisticated then the previous one, mostly because I think the individual items feel a bit more sophisticated and luxurious to me. But most importantly, I have much better haircut, and I can rely on my hair to look nicely put together every morning.

This time last year, I was doing the 30 for 30 challenge, so I have pictures from every single day. So this week, I will be following in Ornella's footsteps and re-wearing my outfits from this time last year. Here is what we are looking at:

This is one of my favorite outfits of the last few weeks. MaryK over at my favorite fashion forum You Look Fab (YLF) started a challenge to wear neutrals for a week. I am not really playing along, but I put together this outfit and I really like it. I think if it weren't for the challenge, I would go with red or cobalt jeans.

I put together this out over the weekend mostly because I wanted to wear this sequin cami again. I have very few occasions in my life that require sporting a sequin embellished top so I gave in to the daytime sparkle trend, which I believe is another marketing trick that retailers employ to convince you to buy another fancy top this holiday season. I sound skeptical, I know, but this outfit turned out really great.

My recent thrift find

I talked on the blog before about how I am not a good thrift shopper because I get easily overwhelmed by the sheer amount of merchandise on the racks. But I don't give up. I found a Savers that I can tolerate (ok, let me be honest - enjoy!!!) browsing and I go frequently. I only have a handful of items from the thrift store but they are much loved and worn.

Well, last time I was at the thrift store, I spotted this bag. It looked like it was quality leather and a quick peak inside revealed that it was Theory brand. It was practically brand new. It had two very small spots that I was later able to clean by rubbing with a moist qtip. The lining was very very clean. I paid $10 for it and took it home with me.

Because it was Theory, I guessed that it would be expensive but googling around, I came upon this site. If random information on the internet can be believed, this bag retailed for over $400 in 2006. Major score!!!

I absolutely adore my new bag and knowing that it cost me only as much as a lunch, instead of half a month's rent makes me feel pretty smug.:)

If you haven't paid attention to the title of this post, the common denominator of the outfits above are the booties. They feature prominently in some of favorite outfits of all time. These booties are only two seasons old - I got them in November 2010, but I've already worn them 47 times. They cost me $34 including a trip to the cobbler to get the worn out heel tops replaced. The cost per wear is currently at 72 cents. I was planning to replace them this year, but I realized that they still have at least another season of life in them. So instead I got a pair of gray boots. :)

Covering up the dress

The last time I wore this dress, I complained that I don't wear this dress very often, mostly because I don't know when to wear it. It has a deep v-neck and is fairly form-fitting, so I can't really layer under it. When I try to layer over it, I find myself limited by the exposed neck. So this time, I decided to take a different approach. I completely covered the upper part of the dress, so you can't even tell if it's a dress or a skirt. But I am quite toasty and I like it as a skirt. What do you think?

Product review: HANAair Professional Hair Dryer

I was recently sent a Hana Air Professional hair dryer by the good folks at Misikko. Hana is their best selling dryer and I can see why.

Let me first explain that I use a hair dryer every time I wash my hair. Apart from perhaps two weeks in the summer when it’s ridiculously hot and humid, and I can’t stand the thought of standing under the heat of the hairdryer, I use my hair dryer all the time. However, I’ve never thought I needed a professional machine. I thought I my chepo Conair did the trick just fine. That is until I tried the Hana. This is the Mercedes of hairdryers! It is incredibly powerful; it literally blows the water off my hair. It takes only a few minutes to completely dry my hair. Compared to my old hair dryer, it runs a bit cooler, which I think is a good thing because it doesn’t scorch my hair. In fact, it leaves my hair unbelievably silky, smooth and static-free. Now, my hair is naturally very tame and easy to style, but with Hana, I can give myself an absolutely salon quality blowout.

Other great things about the Hana dryer are a long cord, a functional cool air button, and a sleek design with little grip pads on the side that prevents Hana hair dryer from slipping off your vanity. I don’t use the cool air button that much, but if this is a feature that you’re looking for in your hair dryer, Hana’s cool air function truly works. The long cord allows me to move across the room to reach for my hair brush or the hair spray.

Now, Hana air dryer is not cheap, and I don’t know if I could justify spending the money on it. That said, having seen how much better my hair looks when using this hair tool, I would definitely put it on my birthday, holiday, anniversary, or Valentine’s gift wish list.

I really like my skinny jeans but nothing beats the simplicity of a bootcut jeans with a blazer. I absolutely love this silhouette. I feel confident and fabulous in it!

Today marks the first anniversary of Bella Remixes...sort of. I started with an introduction post a few days earlier in 2011. I then posted my items for 30 for 30 and then the first remixed outfit.

As I enter second year of documenting my outfits, one of the things I would like to do for the blog is to create more posts. I also would like to post more regularly and consistently. So my plan for the upcoming year is to create 3 outfit posts per week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wednesdays and Fridays will be devoted to other things such as cost per wear posts, reviews, thrift finds, shopping updates and occasional extra outfit.

I also gave a face lift to the blog by changing the templates. I hope that all these changes are for the best and that you will continue to come here and find something interesting every week day.

Here is to a new and wonderful blogging year!

New scarf

Knee high boots are a natural pairing for skinny jeans but I like to wear mine with moto boots as well - a nice change of silhouette. Besides, I was going outlet shopping so I didn't want to fuss with taking off and putting on tall boots every time I wanted to try on something.
I really like this scarf. I purchased it over the holidays from a local arts and crafts fair.I was under the impression that it was locally made and quite surprised to discover a "Made in China" tag when I got home. :(
It is possible that everything I am wearing today was made in China, which is very sad. I don't pretend to be a socially conscious shopper. But I listened to this a few days ago and it really moved me to think more carefully about my choices as a consumer.

Death of my brand new tights

The highlight of today's outfit are the textured tights, which I promptly went ahead and tore two huge holes in, so you will not be seeing them anymore!:( I also like my new pearl necklace and thrifted scarf. Both are replacements. I had lovely strand of jumbo pearls, which was irreparably broken. My mother-in-law was so kind as to buy me this replacement strand. Also, do you remember this scarf? Unfortunately, I lost it over the break. I stuffed it into the arm of my coat when I took off my outerwear and then completely forgot about it until it was time to put it back on. By this time, I had dragged my coat through quite a few a places and probably lost the scarf in the process.:( This one really caught my eye as I was browsing through my Savers. It has a wonderful print and lovely colors. It was only $2 and brand new!

Pilling sweater

I really love this sweater. The color is divine, I adore the cowlneck and it is really cozy. I love layering it over a button-down. Unfortunately, the quality proved really inferior. I only wore this six times total (you know I know that because I keep track of my cost per wear) and it already started pilling!!! I got this from the Jcrew outlet (JCrew Factory, as they call it) as opposed to the actual store but it still cost $60. Is it too much to ask for a $60 dollar sweater to last more than a month? I used a fabric shaver to de-pill for the time being and it is kind of ok. That said, my style is evolving towards a more simple, crisp aesthetic and having my clothes crisp and in excellent condition is a prerequisite of achieving this look. I am really disappointed! Shame on you JCrew!

Cost per wear: Chambray Shirt

This chambray shirt from H&M was a gift from my sister, so technically I didn't pay for it. I am not even supposed to know how much it cost, because it was a gift! In reality, my sweet sweet sister, who lives half way around the world, wanted to buy me a present for my birthday. Instead of buying something I may or may or not quite like and pay for shipping it half way across the world, she had this super smart idea to have me pick something out for myself and then reimburse me for it. So I went to H&M and picked up this chambray shirt along with the black shorts that you see on the upper right corner. I paid $25 for the shirt in December 2010 and since then have worn it a grand total of 29 times, bringing the cost per wear to 86 cents!!! Woot woot! Now, that's a great birthday present!!!

Red skirt love

Here is an outfit from this weekend. I am a bit shy about wearing these bright cobalt pants to work. I think I may need some time for my eyes to adjust to the look. In the meantime, I wanted to give them another whirl over the weekend. The best part about these pants is that I can basically adopt all the outfits that I previously put together with my red pants. The other cool thing about this outfit is the necklace. It is another gift from my secret santa, Denise. Thanks Denise!

The power of accessorizing

Sorry for the prolonged absence. I was away for the break. I scheduled some posts during my absence but apparently what I couldn't anticipate was how busy I would be once I get back to work. Add to that the malfunction of my new camera (it's going back!:( ) and the mysterious sudden disappearance of the battery charger of my old one and I found myself without time or means to take pictures. Too bad, because I donned some cute outfits over the past week. On the bright side, I now get to repeat those outfits.

I know that people sometimes wonder how certain outfits come together, so I took some pictures to illustrate my thought process. Today, I wanted to go a bit more casual, so I know that I would be wearing jeans. I haven't worn these gray jeans in a while, so they were a no-brainer. Then I pulled out this chambray shirt and mustard sweater because the harmony of the two subdued colors really appealed to me. This was the result:

Meh! Ok, but nothing special. So I did what I always do, when I am not quite satisfied with an outfit. I grabbed a scarf. I wanted to wear the scarf loosely around the collar of the shirt, but this still left my neck exposed. So I finally grabbed my current favorite necklace to wear inside the collar. This was my secret santa gift from lovely Denise over at YLF. Thanks Denise!

This denim skirt is a little less over a year old. I purchased it right after Christmas last year. The outlet mall near me was having one of its great sales and the moment we got back from the mall, we had the first snowpalooza of last winter, which swept the entire east coast.
There are no words to describe how much I love this denim skirt. It is a great pencil shape and a great dark wash. I only paid $12 for it at the Banana Republic outlet store and have worn it 35 times, bringing the CPW to 34 cents. It held up amazingly well. It is still in great shape, the color did not fade at all, but the fabric is wearing a bit thin. I guess I should start looking for a replacement soon. Even though it is still in great condition, it is such a wardrobe staple that I wouldn't want to be caught without a denim skirt should anything happen to it.

This dress doesn't get worn too often. It is too short to wear without tights so I can't really wear it in the summer and it doesn't have sleeves so I get cold too cold when I wear it in the winter. This JCrew sweater is another factory find. I love cowlneck sweaters and this one has the perfect cowlneck which allows me to fill the space with a big scarf like I did here, or layer it over a button down shirt. Besides, it's the perfect shade of red. I got it for $60 in November, but already wore it 4 times, so CPW is already down to $15.

This purple, elbow-length cardi is hands-down the most versatile item in my closet. I can wear for about 8 months out of the year, from March until October. I like to wear it with button-downs in the fall and spring, but I l throw it in my tote for a quick, light-weight cover-up as well in the summer. It was pretty inexpensive to begin with, purchased at Gap outlet in July 2010 for only $15, and the cost per wear after 27 wears is down to $0.56. It's definitely held up extremely well, but I might look for a replacement for it in spring. I don't have very many pictures of it as I tend to neglect taking outfit pictures in the summer.

Coming back to the outfit, I really like pairing leopard print with red. Looks very chic and sophisticated to me! To tell you the truth though, I don't think this is leopard print. I can't really tell animal prints from one another! :)

Since I started talking about cost per wear on the blog, let me quickly go over the CPW of the items I am wearing today:
Boots: $13.75 - They are the most expensive item today, because as most leather boots are, these were over $100 even on sale and have only been purchased at the beginning of this fall season.
Skirt: $12.56 - Another pricey item and I also had to have it professionally repaired after ripping the backseam in a comical accident, which added to the overall cost. This is the highest quality, best fitting skirt I own, so I think the price is justified. I have no doubt that it has at least a few years of life left in it, so I am sure the CPW will come down considerably by then.

Dress shirts, or just "shirts" as they call them in the UK, are my favorite type of tops. I usually own a few at a time in neutral colors like white, black and blue and wear them with pretty much everything. The natural pairing for dress shirts are blazers, but they work equally well with sweaters and cardigans. You can also layer them under sheath dresses and even other tops!

Currently, the least cost per wear (CPW) top in my closet is this blue button down from NY&Co. I purchased it in February for a mere $15. In fact, NY&Co was running one of its buy one get one 50% off deals, and I also had a $35 off $75 purchase coupon - which NY&Co sends you frequently if you sign up for emails. I purchased three button down shirts, each costing me about $15. I wore this shirt 23 times, bringing the CPW 65 cents!

Cost per wear: red skinny jeans

One way to think about the value of items in your closet is cost per wear. Cost per wear (CPW) refers to the cost of the item divided by the times that you wear it. So if you buy a $10 t-shirt and wear it only once, your CPW is $10. If, on the other hand, if you wear it 20 items, CPW comes down to only 50 cents! When I think about the cost per wear of an item, I like to add alteration and dry cleaning costs as well. So if you have a dry clean only white jacket that needs to be cleaned by a professional after a few wears, CPW inevitably increases.

I've only started to keep track of CPW more than a year ago, and I have a good idea of what my low CPW items are. Over the next few weeks, I would like to share with you some of my favorite items in the closet - which also happen to be the lowest CPW.

First up is my red skinny jeans. I found them at thrift store for $5 in April 2011. Since then, I've worn them a grand total of 18 items, bringing the CPW to a whopping $.28. Yes, that's 28 cents people!

In search of a good tailor

The last time I wore this skirt was in April. I was all dolled up and ready to leave my apartment, when I realized that I left my cell phone on the dresser. The very luggage that you can see in the picture was standing in my way, so instead of going around it, I had the crazy idea to jump over it. I did make it to the other side, but busted the back seam of the skirt in the process.:) I finally took it to the tailor's a few weeks ago to get it fixed. It wasn't a difficult job, I could have hand sewn it myself but it is an expensive skirt so I wanted it done professionally with a sewing machine. Unfortunately, when I went to pick it up, I realized that the tailor had completely botched the job, the seam was all puckered. Fortunately, they took the skirt back and fixed it. It took another week but I finally have my skirt back. Yay!

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were exploring one of the quaint, little towns of New England and came across lovely vintage store with a huge selection of accessories. I browsed through racks and racks of surprisingly affordable vintage necklaces, earrings, and brooches and came home with these finds. They were only $5 each.

I wanted to give my new accessories a thorough cleaning before wearing them. I googled a bit, found a lot of information and decided to go with a quick, easy and cheap method. I found out that you are not supposed to soak your accessories in water, but instead use warm water, windex and a soft toothbrush. Clean gently and pat dry with a soft towel. Let them air dry for a few hours to make sure that they are completely dry.

While I love my jeans of all silhouettes, I don't wear pants that often. I think skirts and dresses suit and flatter my pear shape better. Yet, I couldn't bear the thought of these gorgeous pants languishing in closet and decided to give them a try. I am not going to run out and buy more pants any time soon, but I think this outfit turned out ok. It was very comfy too.

I don't usually get to show you my outerwear or handbag. I walk to work in the mornings and I take my laptop with me so I almost always carry a backpack to distribute the weight evenly. It is a stylish, leather backpack but a backpack nonetheless. Leaving my laptop at home and carrying a real handbag is such a rare treat.

EShakti Dress Review

A few weeks ago, Eshakti offered me one of their garments to review on my blog. Even though I haven’t made a purchase from Eshakti before, I knew about the company from the blogosphere. They are known for offering quality clothes at affordable prices. I browsed the Eshakti website quite a bit. Eshakti has a lot of cute things and it was difficult to make a decision. These were a few of my favorites:

How cute is this hummingbirds felted wool skirt?

Even though Eshakti offers a wide range of merchandise, I had seen bloggers wear their gorgeous dresses and I decided order a dress of my own. I have quite a few dresses in my closet and my rule for buying new ones is that they should be work-appropriate. That means a modest neckline and nice length. The best part about Eshakti merchandise is that they can be customized to suit your needs. You can choose the length of the sleeves and hem and even the neckline. I decided to go with this beautiful dress in a black and white floralprint.

I received the dress promptly and could not wait to put it on.

I chose to customize the sleeves and got elbow length sleeves. I am happy to report that they turned out beautifully.

I only wished that I had ordered my regular size. I compared my actual measurements to the Eshakti size chart and ordered the dress size closest to my measurement, which is one size larger than the one I normally wear. I think I would have a more accurate and better fit if I went with my regular size.

It is very hard to find decent dresses with long sleeves so I think that this will be a favorite dress this winter.

DIY necklace

Individual garments in my closet have a life-span of about 3-4 years (excluding special occasion items like cocktail dresses and formal shoes). This dress was given to me as a gift by my mother-in-law in Fall 2008. At the time it was one of the few dresses in my wardrobe, now I have a slew of them. But, this dress still remains a favorite and I try to wear it at least a few times each season. I wish I had a rhinestone-studded bib necklace like this one below to wear with it, but I don't. So I'm wearing one of my own creations.

And, in case you didn't know, it snowed here on Saturday. The winter is now officially here and I have no qualms about wearing a wool turtleneck. In fact, I rotated my closet this weekend, so now I have access to all my wool sweaters.

I've been trying to get better at managing my closet, so I don't have to rotate but I have very closet limited space. I've gotten better at closet size control though. Now, I only put away a small number of summer skirts and dresses and bring out my winter sweaters (only one small box, 12"X12"X12"). I also put away a similar sized box of summer sandals away and bring out the knee-high boots.

50s were the decade of of waist-cinching full skirts worn with sweaters, oxford shoes. Since I don't have any full skirts, I looked through some images 50s images for an alternative silhouette. This picture captured my attention:

For this decade, I was inspired by this picture of my grandmother.

I had to completely improvise with the bottom part of the outfit because I don't have anything remotely appropriate. But I think from the waist up, I was able to capture the silhouette of my grandma's outfit.

My grandmother was the kindest and the most generous person I've ever known. I sincerely hope that one day I can be as giving as her when it comes to money, time and energy. She was and continues to be a true inspiration for me.

Starting on Monday, I am embarking on a new style challenge. Each day, I will put together an outfit inspired by a decade in fashion.

Here is the schedule:

Monday: 30s/40s

Tuesday: 50s

Wednesday: 60s

Thursday: 70s

Friday: 80s

I am not an expert in fashion history. But I dug around a bit and it seems that the fashion did not really change too much from 30s to the end of WW2. The biggest leap came towards the end of the 40s, when pencil or full skirts with waist definition became all the rage and culminated in the familiar silhouettes of the 50s. That's why 30s and 40s are lumped together.

I am just going to take a second to sing the praises of starch. I started using a while ago and I love it. I had used starch to iron this shirt. I ironed it and hung it in my wardrobe more than a week ago. When I pulled it from the hanger this morning, it looked so clean and crisp that it looked like it just came from the store. If you like your clothes, but especially button-downs, crisp like I do, I would strongly recommend giving starch a try. It makes it easy to iron as well. - double score!

Saturday was a glorious fall day. It was warm and sunny. We visited an art s& crafts fair and had a leisurely lunch outside. I didn't even wear my cardi most of the day.

On a completely different note, I am looking to replace these shoes. I am in the market for a pair of pointy toe black shoes, with a bit of interest (zipper, buckle, etc), either a very low wedge or flat - but a bit of wedge would be better. If you see anything like that, would you give me a holler?

This is one of the new Ann Taylor tops that I mentioned in my shopping update. It is well-fitting, chic and comfy. I am positively addicted!
I had to add a black cardi under the leather jacket. We are in this in-between period where the weather is not cold enough so the heating in my office did not come on yet, but it is cold enough that a simple cardi just doesn't cut it. I have to bundle up in my office.

At the beginning of August, I announced here my shopping plan for the upcoming year. I decided to forgo buying smaller items here and there and instead pool my funds towards updating the big ticket items in my wardrobe. It's been two months since this resolution, and it is time for an update.

I did really well at the beginning, buying a new winter coat and a watch. I also purchased a nice pair of jeans. I still have to have them hemmed, so I didn't cross them off my list yet. The next big item on my list was a pair of cognac boots. So there they are:

These are the Geox Donna Viviana knee-high boots in cognac, available for purchase from Amazon. I've already worn them once here. I really like them and I think they will be a great addition to my wardrobe this winter.

Now, this was the good part. The bad news is, I also made other purchases here and there.

Finally I ordered two Ann Taylor tops: This one and this one in a different pattern and I purchased a striped top from H&M to replace one from last year that was a wardrobe staple.

I am really happy with these purchases. I don't think they were impulse buys. I've already worn most of them numerous times and they will be workhorses come winter. That said, I am aware that I didn't really stick to my resolution and I have to do better if I ever want to check off all the items on the list.

I am just putting out here to keep myself accountable and stick to my list in the upcoming months.

After the success of my floral Ann Taylor top, I was on the hunt for more tops from Ann Taylor. They are really high quality and fit me well. I am very happy to score this one at Savers. Ann Taylor and animal print - two birds with one stone! I love it. I am also very happy with this outfit. This is exactly how I envisioned wearing this top when I bought it. It turned out exactly like I imagined.

My apologies for the goofy expression. Of all the pictures I took this morning, this was the best - oh, the horror!
The most interesting part of my outfit today is the shoes. I had the heels shortened. These pumps are pretty comfy, with a generously padded footbed and thick heels, but despite a hidden platfom, they were still to high for me to wear on a daily basis. A quick trip to the cobbler solved the problem. He shortened the heels by about an inch and told me that he could chop even more with shoes that don't have a platform. I didn't notice any issues with the fit or ergonomy but I suspect that it could be a problem if I need to lose more height. For now, I am happy that I spent only $15 and claimed back and expensive pair of quality shoes.

I only got a chance to get one picture this morning before my battery died so you don't get to see my face today. But I thought the outfit is pretty cool and worth posting on the blog.

I got this cream jacket from Plato's Closet. It is real leather and still had the tags on. I tried it on in the store on Thursday, but couldn't make up my mind. On Friday, I returned with my husband and he convinced me to buy it. It is $40, way too expensive for a consignment item, but given that it was in mint condition and fit me to a T, I decided that it was worth it. I am super excited to wear it with all sorts of outfits, including my red jeans and red skirt.

Everybody Everywear: Colored Pants

This photo is a bit blurry but I wanted to post it anyway, I love this outfit.

I like the idea of thrifting, but I am not very good at it. I am overwhelmed by the amount of merchandise at Goodwill and the total lack of a logical system to sort the merchandise. I've had good consignment karma recently at Plato's Closet when I found this blazer and this top. Plato's closet is a bit more manageable for me because the merchandise is clean, pre-selected and sorted according to type and size. The downside is it is very expensive and virtually impossible to find a real gem - i.e. a great brand item at a reasonable price. The stores will usually only buy certain brands and the sales associates are familiar enough with them that they are priced accordingly. To be fair, on my last trip I did spot a genuine Oleg Cassini winter jacket for $18. I guess the young sales associates failed to recognize Jackie O's official state wardrobe designer. It was slightly soiled and completely out of my color scheme (lots of browns and oranges) so I passed but maybe I should go back for it next week.

Savers is a genuine thrift store, but it is a bit more organized, the clothes are somewhat curated and sorted according to size. The store is spacious, airy and well-ventilated, which makes for a much more enjoyable shopping experience. I also make a point of prioritizing my needs: tops (only certain prints and fabrics such as polka dots, animal prints, stripes, silk or satin), vintage wool skirts (with super heavy, warm wool and impeccable tailoring), midi skirts, colorful pants, belts, handbags and accessories. So armed with my well-conceived shopping strategy and lots of hand sanitizer, I can walk through Savers and actually enjoy it. Even then, I don't really buy that much at the Savers. I hold every single item that enters my closet to the highest standards:
- Do I love it?
- Does it fit me well? Is it flattering?
- Will I wear it in more than one way? Does it fit with the rest of my wardrobe?
I am not going to purchase anything just because it is cheap, or a designer item. So in addition to the above mentioned blazer and top, my thrifted closet consists of these red jeans, a couple of nice, leather belts and a few brooches.

This week though, I did hit the thrifting jackpot at Savers. As I said, I scan the racks for eye-catching prints and luxurious fabrics. So naturally, I reached for this shiny blouse. I immediately realized that it was high quality because it felt very soft and luxurious to the touch. A quick look at the fabric contents revealed that it was 92 % silk, 8% polyester. Finally, I look at the brand, and it is Theory! Even though I was really excited at this point, I still tried it on to see that it fit me well and examined it for any problems.

The next part was harder and more time-consuming. I had to wash my new-to-me silk shirt. Now, if you do own an actual Theory silk shirt, that runs anywhere from $200-350, you should probably send it to the dry cleaner's. Considering I only paid $5 for it, I was willing to risk ruining it by attempting to handwash it. I followed the instructions on this website, and am very happy with the result. But boy, I can see how it is considered a luxurious fabric. If you had a wardrobe-full of these, you'd have to have an army of servants for the sole purpose of washing, rinsing, drying, and ironing your silk shirts, dresses, and handkerchiefs.

But ultimately, it is totally worth the effort. I've been wearing it all day today, it is the comfiest, coziest, best item of clothing that I've ever owned. I want to wear it all day, everyday and then sleep in it, too. :)

I love dressing to the nines for the first day of classes. A suit is a bit too uptight, a dress on its own is not authoritative enough. A blazer over a dress, however, strikes the perfect balance. While the pearls say I am serious, the scrunched sleeves say I know how to have fun, too.:)

See how perfect my hair looks? It was not at all how it looked when the afternoon rolled around. We are getting torrential rains today and my hair was a huge, frizzy disaster because of all the humidity. Do you have any tips for dealing with humidity? I don't think my hair was affected this much by the humidity when it was longer. It still looked somewhat ok. I love my shoulder-length cut but the humidity is really driving me crazy.

This outfit was inspired by this color block skirt from modcloth that I found on pinterest.

I purchased this vest in February, thinking it would be a great layering item for fall and spring. Ironically, I could not find a way to make it work in the spring but it served me very well over the summer.

I had a haircut today. I love my stylist, she does a great job. My only complaint is that she uses a product that makes my hair super shiny. I suspect that it is a bit heavy for the texture of my hair and starts to weigh it down after a while. I forget to tell her not to use it and then feel grumpy afterwards when my newly cut hair feels greasy and limp. Today, I was able to prevent the greasiness with a bit of dry shampoo. It is not the ideal solution, but my hair feels ok for now. I must remember to tell her not to use it the next time.

I know that the fashion blogger world is rife with excitement for fall fashion. People are tired of summer and cannot wait to don jeans, boots, sweaters, trench coats. I am the complete opposite, I don't want summer to end. I feel like nice, warm weather just barely arrived. Granted, the month of july was too hot, even unbearable. But the weather has been so balmy for the couple of days, I don't want it to come to an end. :( I am taking every opportunity to wear one final time my summer favorites.

This white eyelet skirt is definitely a favorite. I will most likely not be wearing it again this summer. Even though I don't adhere to no white after labor day rule, a white eyelet skirt is best reserved for warm, sunny, summer days just like this. This top is another favorite. Just like the skirt, I've had it for a few seasons. I wore it for work back in May. Now, it is beginning to show some signs of wear and is not as crisp or polished as I prefer my work wear to be. So I demoted it to casual wear and I am getting a bit more mileage out of my beloved top.
